Who is The Weeknd?
Born Abel Tesfaye in February 1990, he has enjoyed enormous success under the stage name "The Weeknd" despite being a relative newcomer on the international scene. Like many modern artists, he started modestly, mixing his songs at home and uploading them to YouTube. He began to attract attention in 2011 thanks to the success of various mixes he produced featuring his unique blend of electronic R&B songs. Within a year, he had been signed by record label Republic Records, and his songs would then be released to colossal acclaim around the world. It is said that the mystery surrounding his identity was a contributing factor to his early success with his debut studio album Kiss Land, released in 2013.
Through the album Beauty Behind the Madness (2015), The Weeknd took himself to a different level than before. The album spawned two top singles on US Billboard, The Hills and Can't Feel My Face, both of which became huge hits in both Europe and North America, selling a whopping 1.5 million album copies in their debut year. The album was the tenth biggest seller worldwide and led to a Grammy award in 2016 for Best Urban Contemporary Album. The Weeknd then followed up with Starboy, whose title track also topped Billboard. The album repeated the success of its predecessor and yet still earned Grammy awards.
After Hours tops the charts around the world
In 2020, The Weeknd released his latest album, the worldwide hit After Hours. To date, it has reached number one in more than 20 countries, including the UK and US. With the single Blinding Lights, it became one of the most popular albums of 2020 - worldwide. Although all 14 songs on the album have reached the Billboard Hot 100, Blinding Lights is by far the most successful song The Weeknd has released. Among other things, the song topped the charts in the UK for a full eight weeks. In the US, the single became The Weeknd's fifth single and has so far reached number one in 34 countries. Despite being on the international scene for less than a decade, The Weeknd has sold more than 75 million albums and there's no sign of his popularity waning - quite the contrary!
The praise from critics
In addition to the huge album successes, The Weeknd has been highly regarded by the music press and critics around the world. He has already collected three Grammys, nine Billboard Music Awards, multiple Junos and American Music Awards, and in 2016 he was nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards for the single "Earned It." He has already become one of Canada's most successful artists of all time, receiving the prestigious Allan Slaight Award in 2014 in recognition of his contribution to music at such a young age.
A true entertainer
The Weeknd has been a consummate performer and entertainer since his early breakthrough. After all, the After Hours Tour is his eighth concert tour. Known for his blend of perfect live vocals and a varied repertoire of dance moves along with lighting and pyrotechnics, you can expect one of the world's hottest live performers on stage in Stockholm. He has already played to over a million fans on tours in North America, Asia and Europe. Don't miss out on buying your tickets for The Weekend when he comes to Avicii Arena.
